Can Fermented Kraut and Salsa Help with Acid Reflux & Bloating?

For many people, bloating and acid reflux are just part of daily life. You eat, you bloat. You lie down, the burning starts. That was our reality too, until we changed what we were putting on our plates.

Fermented foods like sauerkraut and fermented salsa were a game-changer for both reflux and bloating. And we’re not just saying that because we make them, the science backs it up too.

Let’s break down how these foods work and why we created our PowerKraut and ImmuniKraut to support real gut issues.

Why Bloating and Reflux Happen in the First Place

While they feel like different problems, bloating and reflux often come from the same root issues:

  • Poor digestion

  • Imbalanced gut bacteria

  • Slow stomach emptying

  • Gut lining inflammation

If your digestion is sluggish or your gut microbiome is out of balance, food sits for longer, ferments in the wrong way, and pushes pressure upwards — leading to acid reflux. It also creates gas and bloating.

How Fermented Foods Can Help

Fermented vegetables like kraut and salsa are rich in live bacteria (probiotics), organic acids, enzymes and fibre. Here’s why that matters:

1. They support better digestion

Lactobacillus and other bacteria in fermented foods help pre-digest the food you eat. This means less strain on your own digestive system.

2. They introduce beneficial microbes

Adding probiotic-rich foods may help shift the balance of your gut microbiome, reducing gas-producing bacteria and calming inflammation.

3. They contain postbiotics

Fermented veg creates postbiotics like lactic acid, which may help lower stomach pH slightly and improve enzyme activity, both helpful for digestion.

4. They feed your gut lining

The fermentation process can increase bioavailability of nutrients like vitamin C and K2, which support gut lining integrity.

Our Fermented Foods and Why They Work

We make our krauts and salsa slowly and simply. No vinegar. No pasteurisation. Just salt, veg, time and patience.

PowerKraut

Our original. Packed with organic cabbage, carrot, turmeric and black pepper. Earthy, tangy, anti-inflammatory. Great with eggs, rice bowls or straight off the fork.

ImmuniKraut

Cabbage, red onion, beetroot, ginger and garlic. Full of bold flavour and natural support for immunity and digestion.

Fermented Salsa

Tomato, garlic, onion, coriander and chilli — fermented into a lightly spicy, probiotic-rich dip that goes on everything. Unlike supermarket salsa, it’s alive.

We make them all by hand in small batches from organic veg and spring water. Each one is raw, unpasteurised and full of life.

How to Use Them If You Struggle with Reflux or Bloating

Start small. If your gut isn’t used to fermented foods, try a teaspoon or two with meals. Build up gradually.

Pair with:

  • Cooked meals (rice, eggs, roasted veg)

  • Heavier dishes (helps break down fat and protein)

  • As a condiment or topping (no need for big portions)

Eat them regularly, a little every day is better than a lot once in a while. That routine is what helps support a stable gut.
